Two CBC students had a lot of success at the Governor’s Cup Regatta in Columbus, Ohio this spring. As part of the St. Louis Rowing Club, Freshmen Luke Helt competed in the 1st 8 and 4 boat races and Sophomore Antwan Harris competed in the 2000-meter race with a winning time of 7:56. Both students started rowing this past fall.

Luke Helt said, “Several people told me I would be very good at it and I heard about all of the people getting scholarships to Ivy League schools because of it so I decided to give it a try.”

When asked how he got started, Antwan Harris said, “I started with a student at CBC, named Terrence Griffin. We both started together, but he later stopped for track.”

Both students trained hard for the regatta. Luke Helt said, “I train nonstop ever since I started the sport, takes up all of my time.”

Antwan Harris described his pre-race workout, “We did a small seven-minute jog, then on the water we do a pair add in drill and a power 10 and 20.”

Their hard work and preparation has paid off. Things are also looking good for the team as a whole. Head coach Tim Franck said “In Oak Ridge, the kids medaled in 19 of the 21 events they entered including 11 GOLDS. And in Columbus, at the Governor’s Cup Regatta, the SLRC tied the Cincinnati Juniors for the highest team points in total. Both big successes and signs of good things to come!”

KCBC is the television production program sponsored by CBC and directed by Mr. Tom Murray. The broadcast is shown every morning on each classroom’s SmartBoard. The broadcast usually consists of the events going on relating to CBC and other assorted announcements. However, KCBC is evolving next year to incorporate news from not only inside the CBC community, but outside as well. This may include key events happening in the St. Louis area. Another change is soliciting freshmen to join KCBC at freshmen orientation.

On my trip to the KCBC studio, which is located below the gym in the activities wing of CBC, I witnessed just how things worked while setting up for the broadcast that morning. To my surprise, the atmosphere was quite relaxed. Everyone had a responsibility and executed his task. However, there were small kinks that the crew had to work out such as sound bugs and camera angles.

While in the studio, I overheard some of the producers tossing around ideas to improve next year’s broadcasts. One of them was to change the camera angle and even add a new camera to shoot from during the morning broadcasts. When I talked to Mr. Murray, he said that the largest change coming to KCBC in the 2013-2014 year was a reconfiguration of the broadcast space to fit more people into a broadcast view. Also, they are going to try to record videos of sporting events and have them up the next day.

“This won’t be too easy,” explains Mr. Murray. “But we’re going to try.”

If students want to join the 2013-2014 KCBC crew, they can contact Mr. Murray.

On April 23 the CBC Band of Brothers put together an amazing spring concert. It featured the CBC Percussion, Beginning Band, the CBC Concert Band, Jazz Band Purple, Jazz Band Gold, and the Full Jazz Band. The program was under the direction of Mr. Ray Benton and Mr. Marc Strathman.

The spring concert was a huge success and featured many different types of songs. The CBC Percussion played songs such as “Boom Box,” “First Refusal,” and “Canosaurus.”

Next came the Beginning Band and Concert Band. The Beginning Band played two songs, “Eagle Summit March” and “Galactic Episode,” and then gave the spotlight back to the Concert Band after a few numbers by the Percussion. The Concert Band played songs such as “Gadget,” “Chorale and March,” “Saxes Will Rock,” and “Great Locomotive Chase.” “Saxes Will Rock” featured the sax section.

With a bit more to add to the program, the Jazz Band came in. This year, due to the number of band members, the group was split into two separate bands called Jazz Band Purple and Jazz Band Gold. The group also came together as ‘The Band of Brothers’ to create the full jazz band.

The Purple Band started first and played three songs: “Hot Chocolate,” “Bossa De Cancun,” and “T.M.I.” They were all great songs and some featured Jake Riordan, Gage Bazzell, and Alex Kimbrough.

The Gold Band followed soon after with “Crunchy Frog,” “Little Sunflower,” and “Get It On.” These songs featured students such as Chris Kriegsies, Jon Winkler, Andrew Vermiglio, John Ahlert, and Jake Strate.

Finally, the bands all came together as the Full Jazz Band for the big finale. They played “25 or 6 to 4” featuring Chris Kriegsies, Jack Riordan, and Nick Sorel. They also played “Skyfall,” featuring the two seniors John Ahlert and Brendan Solis for their final concert at CBC. The band ended with “Sing, Sing, Sing” with a five-drummer feature. Students Adam Brassel, Brendan Fink, Gus Goldkamp, Tom Hartbeck, and Michael Young, all sat below the stage, each at their own drum set and played a solo in the middle of the song in an all-out solo fill.

The future looks bright for the band as it improves each year. Students interested in joining band should see Mr. Benton or Mr. Strathman for details.

High school is a crucial part of every person’s life, and is most of the time the introduction to the real world. Arguably the most important part of the real world is a job. Finding and then maintaining a job is the basis of life. This begins in high school with small jobs such as mowing lawns, caddying, and lifeguarding.

Many teenagers have jobs for a variety of reasons including making payments for a car, going out with friends, and shopping. The first job that comes to many teenagers’ minds is mowing lawns. However, not all of them take action in committing to this job. Mowing lawns can take a lot of time and is not always consistent in pay because a different homeowner is paying each time. The benefit of mowing lawns is that the pay is usually sufficient to save money for long periods of time, which is necessary in this type of business because it is impossible to run a lawn mowing business in the winter. Overall, mowing lawns is not a constant paying job and cannot make the car payments that many teenagers need to make, but it is a good way for younger high school students to make money.

The next job that many teenagers are migrating to is caddying. Although this can be a tough job, it is very rewarding in the end and throughout the process. The pay is very good, which comes mostly from the tips. For example, at the country club that I will be caddying at this summer, a caddy is paid $20 for a loop, or an 18-hole round. But, the tips averaged last year were around $35. Over $50 to walk a beautiful golf course for 3 hours is not too bad. However, one must be fully committed to this job and have their mind set to it, because it is a demanding job. A caddie must be on his or her feet for more than three hours while carrying a bag that can weigh almost 30 pounds.

The next most popular teenage job is lifeguarding. Many teenagers do this in their high school years. Being a lifeguard takes a lot of training, but it can be worth it. Overall, it can be a very good and fun job to have during the summer. After all, what’s wrong with getting paid to sit by the pool in the sun all day? Lifeguarding has good pay as well, but like every job there are downsides. With lifeguarding comes a large responsibility. These responsibilities include being attentive to swimmers and the guests at the pool at all times in case of an emergency. Also, some may think it is kind of a pain to sit in the sun all day without actually getting into the pool.

There are a variety of summer jobs that any high school teenager can get and they can all be very beneficial. Finding and holding a job at this age teaches advocacy, independence, and introduces teenagers to the real world in small steps.

Phoenix is a relatively well-known French alternative rock band, currently consisting of Laurent Brancowitz on guitar, Thomas Mars as the vocalist, Deck d’Arcy on bass/keyboards, and Christian Mazzalai on guitar. Originally a band called Darlin’, Phoenix separated and gained notoriety in 2000 following two singles. Although they started out as a simple garage band, Phoenix has become a staple hold in French rock music.

Most fans of Phoenix know the band from the 2009 album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. While Bankrupt! has a different and somewhat more-mature sound, fans will be able to recognize the band through the two albums. Bankrupt! offers feel-good vibes that are perfect for summer evenings.

The album kicks off with “Entertainment”, which is perfect for generating adrenaline and an upbeat mood. The adrenaline is quickly cut off, though, with slower songs such as “Trying to Be Cool” and “S.O.S. in Bel-Air”. This trend is continued in the album’s title track “Bankrupt!”. “Drakkar Noir” and “Don’t” pick up the adrenaline again, setting the stage for “Oblique City”, the album’s end track.

Bankrupt! is a well-done album, but the downfall is that every song can be easily classified as either a slow song or an energy-filled song. All the fast songs sound too similar and the same is true for the slow songs. This creates a generic feel and fails to let the songs on the album be something completely individual and special in their own right.

Overall, Phoenix has done well on their fifth album, and this music is great for when someone needs a mood-lifter. This album earns a 7/10 ranking. Previous fans of Phoenix’s sound and current fans of general rock music will enjoy the album, but it is still pretty generic-sounding and doesn’t completely do anything different from stereotypical rock bands.

CBC had a large freshmen class for the 2012-2013 school year and can expect the same for the upcoming 2013-2014 school year. There have been a total of 337 applications submitted, and 305 of them have been accepted. The school expects 260 students to be enrolled on the first day of school. Even though the upcoming freshmen class is smaller compared to this year, it is larger than the average freshmen class size. Due to enrollment, CBC will be hiring an additional faculty member in the math department.

Mr. Jim Brockman, Director of Admissions, explained why he thinks so many kids choose CBC, “They come based on their shadow experience, the academic experience, and co- curricular experiences.” He also said the existing students have an impact on their decision.

CBC had not changed the recruitment practices since last year. The school still utilizes various methods to get our name in front of the public such as direct mail, live radio reads, and radio advertising on stations including KSLZ-FM (107.7), KPNT-FM (105.7), and KSD-FM (93.7). All of this marketing contributes to the recruiting process and is a key reason for the increased numbers in the freshmen class.

One of the most unique and influential events at CBC is the CBC Speakers Series directed by Mr. Bill Canavan. Those who have had the pleasure of attending these events describe it as intriguing and entertaining. Simply put, it is a large lecture where interesting people talk about interesting things.

Canavan began the CBC Speakers Series six years ago after he became the director of the Honors Program.

“I modeled it after our wonderful St. Louis Speakers Series,” he said. Past speakers have included heavyweights like Tom Brokaw or Condoleezza Rice, “However, I bring in local folks from various walks of life who might have a good story to tell and an interesting way of telling it,” said Canavan. This unique detail gives his speakers series a community feeling where the speakers can relate more to the students.

“I try to find people who have been given a gift – in the same way that our honors program students have – who have made the most of that gift, and who have endeavored to share it with others,” said Canavan.

This year CBC welcomed the following speakers:

Scott Rosenblum-a premier St. Louis criminal defense attorney who spoke about the fact that even bad guys, no matter how bad, deserve legal representation

Dr. Jack Strauss-a St. Louis University professor of economics who spoke on the state of both the U.S.and global economies

Dr. Charlie Miller-a cyber-security expert who spoke about the havoc cyber terrorists can wreak upon a nation

Dr. Bob Hansman-a Washington University artist-in-residence and professor of architecture who spoke about his art school for inner-city youth, City Faces

The speakers series is open to any CBC students who want to attend. Four of the events occur in the first semester at CBC at 7:00 p.m. in Ross Hall. For more information, see Mr. Canavan.

Ultimate Club CBC (The Gators) was at DeSmet Ultimate Club (DUC) April 21 with its 2nd Division I junior varsity game of the season. The Gators went in with a 1-2 record with an early season win versus Division II Parkway South and a very tough 10-8 loss at Saint Louis University High School (SLUH). The Gators traded points the first half before SLUH scored the last four points in the game to win on a 1:30pm hard cap, 10-8.

CBC had never beaten the DUC’s junior varsity team in the programs history. CBC went out to an 8-0 halftime lead and would eventually hang on in the second half with a goal from Mitch Brungard. This sealed the historic win 14-7 on a 2:45 hard cap.

This year’s ultimate team is led by senior captains Billy Imming and Andrew Huebner. This team returned almost its entire roster after graduating two seniors from last year’s quarterfinalist team. They have added key new players such as Brandon Eisenbath, Mitch Brungard, Reed Hinton, Eric Hilkenkamp and Joe Amsler. Eisenbath and Hilkenkamp have seen significant playing time on the varsity level. The team plays a “split-squad” schedule, picking up practice games from the Clayton team’s schedule, who chose to fold from the league. The Gators are coached by Mr. Tim Morris and Mr. Matt Reardon ’83. Team alums are also welcome to come and help. CBC has had graduates go on to play ultimate at such schools as Saint Louis University and Iowa State.

With a Division I win, the team greatly improved in the standings which are updated each week. The team moved up from their current 11th place to 5th place. Since the top eight advance to the state tournament, it looks promising that CBC will qualify for the state tournament without a play-in game. During the tournament the Gators will compete as a combined squad as they have for most of their varsity schedule. Standings and scores can be found at www.stlouis-ultimate.org under the high school link and then under SLUJ scores.

The championship game this year will be streamed live on Prepcasts.com. DeSmet and Priory are the early favorites for a rematch of last year’s title game, but CBC and Francis Howell central will be two possible “bracket busters” to look out for.

The CBC D-line of Billy and Will Imming, Matt Geer, Anthony Behle, Brandon Eisenbath, Mitch Brungard and Keegan Walsh, should see the first pull.

Last year at state CBC won the SLUJ League Farricker Spirit Award. This is the highest award that an ultimate team can receive. It is awarded annually at the state tournament to the team who, as voted by the other players best exemplifies “Spirit of the Game”. This rule governs the sport of Ultimate.

CBC offers a club called Model United Nations or Model U.N. for short. Senior Grant Vogel, secretary of this trending club, stated “The goal of the program is to bring together students interested in international affairs to help them learn more about the subject. Model UN also helps us develop our debate skills and anyone can participate!”

Dr. Jim Dohle currently runs the program along with Mr. Craig Nicoletti; however next year Mr. Nicoletti will lead the club with another teacher as assistant. Model U.N meets as a whole group once or twice a month to work on resolutions

When asked what he enjoys most about Model U.N., Vogel replied “I enjoy the debate aspect more than anything; that is what Model UN is all about. Making people’s statements invalid by stating facts is the most amusing. They tend to look confused and distressed after doing so.” So for students who love debate, arguing, politics, or proving people wrong, the club should sound like a catch.

Another enjoyable aspect of the club is that they take field trips. Vogel explained that the club travels to McKendree once in the fall and once in the spring and to Chicago.

There are many benefits to joining Model UN such as gaining arguing confidence, trips to Chicago, meeting new people, and sharing love for politics. In addition, Vogel said “Joining Model UN looks great on a college application because most colleges have Model UN’s of their own.”

For more information about joining this club, see Mr. Nicoletti.

The CBC racquetball team played in two of the biggest tournaments this year, the state tournament and the national tournament. Both of these tournaments were held in St. Louis at Vetta Concord.

The state tournament did not go in CBC’s favor as most players lost in the first round to tough opponents from Saint Louis University High School. The star of the varsity team in state was Ben Lis, who went on to finish third in his division. John Christiansen also made it out of the first round, but lost in the quarter finals. Overall this was a tough state tournament for the CBC racquetball team.

The JV3 team also competed in state. Rend Schindler, the highest ranked CBC JV3 player finished second in state, out of about 100 kids. He was followed closely by Dan Schuler, who played a division down, and also finished second. Kevin Dunn also had a really good showing, finishing third in state in his division. Overall the JV3 team had an amazing showing at the state tournament, leading CBC to a fourth place finish.

The national tournament followed right after the state tournament. CBC had five entrants into the national tournament: John Summers, Ben Lis, John Christiansen, John Meiners and Tim Lis. Unfortunately both Tim Lis and John Meiners had to drop out in the quarter finals due to injury. Ben Lis finished fourth in the third boys division. John Summers played some hard matches, losing in the finals, to finish second overall. And the star of the night, John Christiansen came away with the win in the fifth division.

Congrats to the CBC racquetball team on a tough season. Next season will only get better.
